Since January 2020, more than 500 suspected opioid overdoses statewide have involved "blue pills," according to the OERT alert. "It's something that might be perceived to be a safe, prescription drug, that could be misused perhaps. When really, it's an illicitly made manufactured, potent drug that is deadly," Department of Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse Services Director Sara Goldsby said. "That's where we've been identifying it is in individuals who have experienced overdose related to these blue pills." A Logan Square man was so angry a passerby asked his girlfriend if she needed help while the two were fighting, he shot and killed him, Cook County prosecutors said Thursday. Michael Bankston III had just parked his car when he saw 22-year-old Jesus Garcia arguing with his girlfriend in the 2600 block of North Milwaukee Avenue on the morning of Sept. 17, Assistant State's Attorney Kevin DeBoni said. Bankston, 25, intervened and approached when he saw Garcia grab the woman by her shoulders and neck, and asked her if she was OK, DeBoni said. That's when Garcia allegedly turned his ire toward Bankston, pulling out a 9-mm handgun and shooting him. When Bankston fell to the ground and began to crawl away, Garcia then shot Bankston six more times, DeBoni said. Bankston was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he later died, Chicago police said. Garcia was arrested on Tuesday and charged with first-degree murder. Inside a warehouse in northeast Washington, Adedolapo Adegbite packs a portable freezer with coronavirus vaccines and pauses to pull out a blue clipboard. She scans a list of patients, pulls her smartphone out of her scrub pants pocket and dials the first number on the list. After three rings, Peggy Omole picks up. For nearly three decades, Omole has lived in a fifth-floor studio apartment in the southwest corner of the nation's capital. While she used to greet guests and watch plays and world-renowned performers at nearby Arena Stage, she hasn't sat in an audience for a long time. Eight years ago, a doctor diagnosed Omole with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, "one of those diseases that doesn't have a cure," she said. Since then, Omole has been in and out of hospitals to treat her symptoms; her weight has dropped and a persistent cough rattles her frail frame. Her illness and the coronavirus pandemic have confined Omole, 73, to her h...
