Australian Study Finds General Practitioners Tend to Adhere to Guidelines When Treating Melanoma - AJMC.com Managed Markets Network

The finding is important because evidence suggests it is becoming more common for patients to receive care from a general practitioner for skin cancer, versus a surgeon or dermatologist. The high rate of melanoma management by general practitioners (GPs), as opposed to specialists, does not appear to impact survival rates or the likelihood that guidelines are followed, according to a new report based on treatment data from Australia and New Zealand. That rate was up from 43% of patients in 2003. "The increase in management by GPs has raised questions about the quality of management in that setting, for which limited data are available," Rosendahl and colleagues wrote in the Australasian Journal of Dermatology. The investigators turned to the S

Afro-Colombian environmental activist, feminist and lawyer Francia Márquez won the third-highest number of votes in Colombia's March presidential primary. She's now the running mate for Gustavo Petro, the current front-runner in Colombia's May 29 presidential elections. In a country where elite men hold most political power, Márquez's candidacy signals the growing influence of women and minorities from rural and conflict-affected zones. Márquez and Petro are promising change, including economic empowerment and access to land for Colombia's poor, and improved access to health care, among other progressive goals. But those who oppose a more inclusive Colombia impose high costs on candidates like Márquez. She has received multiple death threats and has full-time bodyguards, an indication that her presence and platform threaten the political status quo. Who is Francia Márquez, and what does her candidacy mean? Colombia's elections in May could determine the fate of
