Image
Amazon, the company known for delivering countless boxes to your door as well as for spying and collecting data on you, is acquiring One Medical, a primary care provider, for roughly $3.9 billion the companies said Thursday. The acquisition signals Amazon's continued foray into the healthcare market having bought PillPack in 2018 for $750 million, using the acquisition to launch its own online pharmacy years later. Amazon has also ramped up effort in its telehealth service Amazon Care, along with plans to develop at-home medical diagnostics. If the deal goes through, Amazon would be in possession of the medical data of over 700,000 One Medical customers. However, the purchase of One Medical by Amazon has raised concerns regarding the company's track record with sensitive customer data, especially with the recent news that the company has been giving cops footage from its Ring cameras without customers' knowledge or consent. Clinic to castle connection leads to fast recovery - Sanford Health News

When Abi McMahon was 2 years old, Mom and Dad spotted some pretty unusual bruising. "It was weird because she was 2 and fell all the time and she was clumsy just as all 2-year-olds usually are," Abi's mom Holly McMahon said. The bruising seemed rather atypical for the typical 2-year-old. "At first, I thought, 'I'm sure she fell at day care or something and I just didn't realize it' but they kind of then just kept showing up and it was like, again, maybe this is not normal," she added. "You hear stories of bruises on kiddos and wonder what that might mean so that was a little scary." That's when they called Abi's Sanford Health pediatrician, Jennifer Haggar, M.D., at the Sanford Children's 26th & Sycamore Clinic in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. More: Find pediatric care close to home "I saw some pictures and when I looked at it, I thought the same: I'm worried that this isn't normal and that som...

Image
South Carolina's Fetal Heartbeat Law, which went into effect after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade on June 24, has brought on a long list of unanswered questions about scenarios and legal circumstances surrounding women's healthcare, state OB-GYNs say. "The question that comes in is how sick is sick enough and how do we determine that?" said Dr. Dawn Bingham, an OB-GYN in Columbia and vice-chair of South Carolina's section of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. "Even to us that are trained for this, it is not a black and white issue." The fetal heartbeat law went into effect June 27 after the U.S. District Court of South Carolina stayed the injunction that had previously stopped the implementation of the law. The law prohibits abortions when a "fetal heartbeat" is detected, typically around 6-weeks into pregnancy, except when the life of the mother is threatened. The law...
