Image
Have you ever felt you could not move your neck or stiff shoulders after a long work day? Strained neck and shoulders are some common discomforts people experience in a high-stress environment, such as in the workplace, on a crowded street, or even from working from home during the pandemic. Muscle soreness may seem insignificant, but it causes fatigue, tiredness, or even nausea. When you suffer from neck and shoulder strains, it is pivotal to seek proper treatment. So what causes neck and shoulder pain? How can it be treated? Pure External Muscle Strain From a physical balance perspective, the human muscle-fascia system does not function independently. It joins with the rest of the human body. Therefore, proximal muscles tense up over time which causes aches and pains. For example, when a right ankle sprain is still healing, if you walk using its muscle ligament, it causes imbalance. The strains then lead up to the muscles of the hips. Clinically, these proximal pains ar...

Image
September 27, 2022 Today, U.S. Senators Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) and Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio) led over a dozen of their colleagues in a letter to President Biden, urging him to nominate a Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner to serve at the Social Security Administration. The Social Security Administration has been without permanent leadership for over a year, making it difficult to address longstanding challenges that the agency faces in providing service to Americans who rely on these benefits. The Senators write,  "Today Social Security covers over 179 million workers, and over 70 million people receive monthly Social Security and Supplemental Security Income benefits.  More than one out of every six U.S. residents collects Social Security benefits and older Americans make up about four out of every five beneficiaries.  Recent U.S. Census Bureau reports show that Social Security provides over half of the income for o...

Overworked and underpaid, this Salt Spring Island doctor says family physicians are burning out - CBC.ca

Image
White Coat Black Art 26:30 Salt Spring family doctor blues Three years since starting his family practice, Dr. Christopher Applewhaite says he regularly considers quitting.  Applewhaite practises on Salt Spring Island, B.C. — the largest of the province's Gulf Islands — where, he says, half of the residents are without a family doctor. That figure is far higher than the estimated one in five British Columbians without a physician. Despite the high number of people without a general practitioner, Applewhaite says he's not the only physician reconsidering a career in the province.  Canada is facing a shortage of doctors fuelled, in part, by growing workloads and low pay. On average, nearly 15 per cent of all Canadians 12 and over reported not having a regular health-care provider, according to a 2019 Statistics Canada report. A survey published this month by the Angus Reid Institute suggests that number is now closer to 20 per cent. Applewhaite spoke wi...

Allergists Seek to Improve Shot, Sublingual-Tablet Adherence - Medscape

Image
Two new studies highlight the challenges for patients in sticking with allergy shots or sublingual immunotherapy. Both studies add to arguments in favor of having frank discussions before selecting these options and of making it easier to complete those treatments. The International Forum of Allergy and Rhinology published two studies by Sandra Lin, MD, of the University of Wisconsin and colleagues that were based on the same search of published literature. The investigators started with a pool of 1596 abstracts and identified studies on how well people were able to continue with subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) and with sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT). Sublingual Immunotherapy For the analysis of SLIT, Lin and colleagues defined "persistence" as continuing therapy and not being lost to follow-up. They defined "adherence" as persistence in accordance with prescribed dose, dosing schedule, and duration. Thirty...
