Puppies on Prozac: How to Handle Your Pet’s Anxiety - The New York Times

Image
Veterinarians say they have seen an increasing number of pets experiencing mental distress. Here's how to spot the signs. When my dog Ozzy feels stressed, he emits loud, rambly groans that are ridiculously cute but also make me wonder if he's having a stroke. After noticing that his anxiety swells quite frequently, our trainer recommended that we give him CBD treats to soothe his nerves. Shortly thereafter, our veterinarian prescribed him the antidepressant trazodone for when he's especially stressed, including before vet appointments. Ozzy appears to be in good company: In the process of reporting this piece, I learned that two of my editors have cats on Prozac. In a 2021 survey of 409 dog owners, conducted by the Center for Canine Behavior Studies, researchers reported that just over half of the respondents said they'd given CBD products to their dogs, most commonly to treat fear, stress and anxiety. And while there's no data, as of yet, showing that our furry fri

GSK Releases Positive Study Results for New First-in-Class Tuberculosis Drug - Pharmacy Times

Image
GSK3036656 demonstrates early bactericidal activity with a low, once-daily oral dose after 14 days of treatment. Results from a phase 2 study, investigating a first-in-class investigational antitubercular agent, GSK3036656 (GSK), demonstrated that the drug was well tolerated and showed early bactericidal activity with a low, once-daily oral dose after 14 days of treatment for individuals with drug-susceptible pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). The results demonstrate the potential for the drug to be a component of future treatments to address the TB epidemic, investigators said. "The data show that GSK3036656 is a potential new antibiotic for [TB] that can be used in low, once daily doses. This can help reduce [adverse events (AEs)] and is an important characteristic of any new TB drug," Andreas Diacon, MD, PhD, chief scientific officer at TASK, said in a statement. "GSK3036656 is of a completely new class of antibiotics which makes the chance of drug resistance very low,"

Baptist Women’s Hospital celebrates Thanksgiving in the NICU - WVLT

Image
MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) - Some Mid-South families had to celebrate Thanksgiving without their newest family members this holiday, so staff at one hospital brought the festivities to their tiniest patients so the little ones wouldn't miss out on their very first Thanksgiving. Newborn babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (or NICU) usually have to stay behind after birth until they are healthy enough to go home with their parents. So, workers at Baptist Women's Hospital decided to bring the celebrations to the NICU instead. Take a look at some of the little ones dressed as turkeys to celebrate the holiday. How To Choose The Best Cough Medicine - Forbes

Image
In the same way that there are different types of coughs, there are two different types of over-the-counter cough medicines to help ease acute coughing caused by a cold or flu. Antitussives: Otherwise known as cough suppressants, antitussives block the cough reflex by decreasing activity in the part of the brain that causes coughing. Some brand names include Triaminic Cold and Cough and Robitussin Cough. Expectorants: This type of cough medicine works to thin mucus, which can in turn help your cough move mucus out, clearing your airway. Two expectorant brand names include Mucinex and Robitussin Chest Congestion. The type of cough medicine that will work best for you will depend on the issue you're dealing with. "An expectorant is typically used for a wet cough (caused by the common cold, bronchitis, etc.) to help clear congestion from the respiratory tract, whereas an antitussive is used for a dry cough to control the cough reflex," explains Niraj Patel, D.O.,

A survey of resident physicians' perceptions of competency-based education in standardized resident training in China: a preliminary study - BMC Medical Education - BMC Medical Education

Image
Training medical residents is internationally recognized as a continuing education process that aims to cultivate novice physicians' ability to work independently. China's resident-training program has undergone important changes in recent decades. In the 1990s, the objective of the program was to provide continuing education that transformed medical graduates into qualified clinical physicians; however, a prominent characteristic of this period was that resident training varied considerably across different hospitals. Each province conducted its training according to its own standards. In order to standardise the quality of Chinese doctor, standardized resident training (SRT) mainly led by the National Health and Family Planning Commission (NHFPC) was launched in China in 2014. The Chinese Medical Doctor Association (CMDA) under direct governance of the NHFPC has been commissioned to manage the details of SRT (e.g., creating training content and accreditation standards). The SR

Assessment of Risk for Constipation With Erenumab, Antiepileptic Drugs for Migraine Prevention - Clinical Pain Advisor

Risk for inpatient constipation was found to be similar among patients initiating migraine prevention treatment with erenumab or other anti-calcitonin gene-related peptide (anti-CGRP) receptor monoclonal antibodies, but the risk for constipation was lower for erenumab compared with antiepileptic drugs. These findings, from a retrospective observational study, were published in Pain and Therapy . Investigators from Optum, Amgen Inc, and Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp conducted this study using data from Optum's Electronic Health Record Research Database. Data from patients with diagnostic codes for migraine who were prescribed erenumab, fremanezumab, galcanezumab, eptinezumab, carbamazepine, gabapentin, topiramate, valproate sodium, valproic acid, divalproex sodium, or zonisamide as inpatients between 2018 and 2020 were included in this analysis. Risk for constipation and constipation-related complications was compared between erenumab and other anti-CGRP mo

This Houston beauty bar is using community to uplift fellow Black-woman owned businesses - Houston Chronicle

When Tamanisha Casey-Mayberry met Tiffeny Wilson in 2017, the pair found they had two big things in common: frustration with their old, corporate jobs — and a penchant for entrepreneurship. Some five years later, the women have put the latter into practice, creating a full-service beauty bar that includes companies they own, as well as four other glamor-related businesses run by other Black women.   Etc HTX Manor, 2424 Southmore Blvd. in Third Ward, houses entrepreneurs specializing in massage therapy, pedicures and manicures, lashes, skin care, hair braiding and catering. Each business operates individually under one roof, and on weekends they hold joint events with food, some bubbly and a full day of pampering for clients. "We wanted to make sure our business was focused on Black women, because we, as Black women, didn't see anybody like us doing the services we are doing, or focusing on what our needs were,&q

Anju Peters, MD: Dareen, this is for you. You do a lot of clinical trials. How do use clinical trials for patients, who for example, have stopped responding to their current treatment? Do you offer them other clinical trials? Dareen Siri, MD, FAAAAI, FACAAI: My answer transitions to some of both of your points, in that, as I discussed, in some of these complicated patients with the excellent ENTs school of medicine in my area. We typically will try one of these biologics for about 6 months. I would like to see what you guys are thinking about that as well, and certainly if there's another option, we might try a different one. And, funny enough with these medications, unlike asthma, which clearly states this is an add on therapy with biologics, that's not very clear with all the biologics in terms of the use with nasal polyposis, which I find interesting because that the similar inflammation is underlying it. The best success is add-on treatment, meaning that we're addressi

New Medication Highly Effective in Treating Eczema - SciTechDaily

Image
The drug allows children to sleep through the night instead of scratching. More than half of the children treated saw a greater than 75% reduction in symptoms.  Researchers involved in a new multi-site international phase III study led by Northwestern Medicine found that dupilumab was highly effective in reducing the signs and symptoms of moderate-to-severe eczema . This is the first study to treat moderate-to-severe eczema in infants and children 6 months to 5 years of age with a biologic drug (monoclonal antibody) instead of immune-suppressing medications. More than half the children saw at least a 75% decrease in signs of eczema, highly significant reductions in itching, and better sleep after a 16-week course of dupilumab, a medication that targets a critical immune pathway in allergies. This is the first large, random, placebo-controlled study of a monoclonal antibody for any skin condition, including eczema, in children as young as six months. The research, whic
