Meet the 2021 Top Doctors for Women's Health in New Jersey - Jersey's Best
Ah, to be a "Jersey gal."
Here in New Jersey, you don't have to pump your own gas, and a sweet summer Shore vacation is just a car ride away.
But being a "Jersey gal" isn't always a vacation. Women spend much of their time juggling their family, professional and personal lives, and they are particularly prone to serious diseases that can be prevented — or detected and treated early — with routine examinations and wellness checks. The health information website WebMD list five diseases that most commonly afflict women:
- Heart disease
- Breast cancer
- Osteoporosis
- Depression
- Autoimmune diseases such as thyroid issues, lupus erythematosus and many types of arthritis
Women also commonly need care in the following areas:
- Reproductive and gynecologic wellness, both during a woman's childbearing years and in her "empty nest" years as she approaches or reaches menopause.
- Plastic surgery, either for reconstruction after breast cancer treatment, to re-sculpt her body after pregnancy or just to feel more beautiful and confident.
- Migraine headaches. Women account for more than 70% of migraine sufferers, according to the Migraine Research Foundation, and many women suffer migraine attacks during their prime childbearing years or at the height of their careers.
Fortunately, a woman in New Jersey is never far from a doctor. There are roughly 27,000 practicing physicians throughout the Garden State, the Association of American Medical Colleges says.
But with all those options for medical care comes another dilemma: "How do I find the primary care doctor or specialist who's right for me?" Sorting through the many options can be daunting, so you need a tool that helps you perform an effective yet efficient search to find a doctor who can treat your specific health needs.
That's where Castle Connolly's Top Doctors for Women's Health list comes in.
For nearly 30 years, Castle Connolly Top Doctors, one of the nation's leading health care research companies, each year has asked tens of thousands of physicians across the United States to nominate physicians for inclusion on its list of Top Doctors. When requesting recommendations, Castle Connolly essentially asks doctors: "If you or a family member needed care, which doctor would you choose?"
So, for primary and specialty physicians alike, recognition as a Top Doctor is a mark of excellence in the profession. And for patients, the Top Doctor list can help them quickly pinpoint a doctor who can best meet their needs.
That is why — as a service to help women expeditiously access the ongoing care they need — Jersey's Best once again has partnered with Castle Connolly Top Doctors to provide information on hundreds of New Jersey-based physicians who are on the list.
Why choose a 'Top Doctor'?
Unlike other doctor-search sites that simply list physicians by city or region — or list only those doctors who pay to be included — each Top Doctor is nominated by a peer, then undergoes a rigorous vetting process by a medical review board consisting of expert physicians from the nation's leading teaching hospitals.
Doctors cannot nominate themselves, nor can a doctor pay to be on the list. And, once nominated, a doctor is accepted for inclusion only after approval by Castle Connolly's review board, chief medical officer, chief research officer and research staff.
Not every doctor reaches the Castle Connolly Top Doctors list: Of the more than 850,000 practicing doctors in the United States, about 60,000 — only 7% — are hand selected each year. So, patients can rest assured that they are perusing a list of top-level providers.
That assurance cannot be underestimated. Findings from a 2018 study published in the Interactive Journal of Medical Research suggest that consumers who choose a peer-rated "Top Doctor" are considerably more satisfied with their care, compared with patients who choose physicians who are less favorably rated.
How the List is Developed
Each year, Castle Connolly surveys tens of thousands of medical doctors (MDs) and doctors of osteopathy (DOs), asking them to nominate a peer to the list. The survey process is anonymous and confidential; Each survey recipient is assigned a unique access code to the nomination website to ensure that doctors do not nominate themselves. Castle Connolly also reaches out to leading specialists, clinical department chairs and medical affairs executives at hospitals nationwide, asking them to nominate physicians.
Once a doctor is nominated, Castle Connolly's physician-led research teams evaluate the candidate's:
- Current and valid board certification in his or her specialty
- Experience within the specialty; the doctor must have worked a minimum number of years in practice, depending on the specialty
- Medical education and training
- Hospital staff appointments
- Administrative posts held
- Professional achievements
- Disciplinary/malpractice history
- Interpersonal skills such as listening, communication, empathy and patient confidence
Outcomes history, procedure volume, access to the latest treatment technologies and participation in research also are considered, to the extent information on these metrics is available.
Once selected and approved, each Top Doctor submits a comprehensive professional biography for inclusion with the listing.
The Top Doctors list is updated annually, and also can be updated between yearly updates if key information in the physician's biography changes, or if the doctor's status changes. Castle Connolly also continually reviews and modifies its Top Doctor review process based on changing health care trends and emerging research.
But while Castle Connolly's Top Doctor list includes doctors who are among the best in their areas of practice, it is not a comprehensive list of top-level doctors. Many excellent physicians in New Jersey and elsewhere are not included on the list.
When choosing a doctor, in addition to using the Top Doctors list, also consider insurance plan participation, practice location and ease of access, first impression of doctor and facility, recommendations from a primary care provider for specialist care and recommendations from family, friends and colleagues.
But because being a "Jersey gal" isn't always easy, we hope the following list, sorted by county, will be a valuable starting point for locating a physician who will be your partner in care.
